Crystal cleansing is the most important step in caring for your shiny friends. They are constantly giving out energy, but also absorb energy from their environment. A sure sign of crystals needing an energetic cleanse is when they feel heavier than normal. This is a sign that they have absorbed a lot of energy from their surroundings and through crystal work. Just as humans need sleep to rejuvenate, crystals require regular cleansing to work at their best.
There is no such thing as cleansing a crystal too much. However, if you are unsure of when your crystals need to be cleansed, you can set a regular schedule for peace of mind
After purchasing a new crystal, get in the routine of cleansing them at home. Crystals travel a long way before they join you on your journey. They go from source to seller, and if displayed in a store for any length of time, they also absorb surrounding energies.
Here are several methods that can be used for cleansing.
While any moonlight is beneficial for crystal cleansing, it is best to put your crystals out during full moon, when it shines brightest. This is one of the easiest methods and can also serve as a good reminder to cleanse your shiny friends. You can place your crystals outside, or by a window where the moonlight reaches. They can dance the night away while releasing all the energy they have been storing. By the next morning, they’ll be recharged and ready to go. This method is safe for all crystal types.
Sunlight is another great way to cleanse your crystals, and you are able to do this at any point of the solar or lunar cycle. Set out your crystals in a safe area with sunlight—preferably directly onto the earth if possible. This gives an added cleansing and grounding benefit.
This method works well for most stones but be mindful that prolonged exposure to the sun may affect the surface of your crystal. This method is not recommended for vibrant stones such as amethyst, nor softer stones, which can be damaged by wet weather.
Smudging (Sage, Incense, Sweetgrass)
Smudging is another method that is safe for all crystals. It is recommended to use sage, sweetgrass, or incense of these scents. Both sage and sweetgrass have cleansing properties, and can also be used in combination.
To cleanse your crystals with this method, light your choice of smudge stick and wave it gently in the air. Then, with each crystal, hold it within the smoke for 30 seconds to a minute. Allow the crystal to be enveloped within the smoke for it to be cleansed.
Unless you enjoy the scent of your smudging choice, it is recommended that this is conducted outside or by a window.
High vibrational sounds are not only healing, but also cleansing. Also safe for all crystal types, sound healing uses a single pitch or tone to wash over an area, thus bringing it to the same vibration.
This can be achieved with chanting, singing bowls, a tuning fork, cymbals, or even a nice bell. Regardless of your tool, the sound needs to be loud enough for the vibration to surround the crystal.
There are two methods of water cleansing for crystals. Before proceeding, check your crystals and it’s properties. It is not suitable for brittle, porous, or soft stones. It is also not suitable for crystals that contain trace metals. However, it is great for hard stones such as quartz and amethyst.
- Running water
Regardless of your water source, whether it is running water from a tap or a natural steam in nature, water will neutralise any negative energy stored within the crystal. Natural running water is best, as it reconnects your crystal with nature, but is not necessary.
To cleanse your crystal, submerge it in water for approximately a minute, then pat dry.
Salt has been used since ancient times to absorb unwanted energy and repel negativity. For those who love going to the beach, take along your crystals for a cleanse. It is recommended that you take a bowl or bucket to collect seawater in so you don’t lose your precious gems at sea.
To cleanse, submerge your crystals into the seawater and let it soak for a few hours, or a couple of days. Once completed, give them a rinse and pat dry.
Burying in the Earth
By burying crystals into the earth, you allow them to reconnect with their energy source and cleanse in this way. However, it is not recommended for water-soluble crystals as they can dissolve if the earth is too wet. It is also not recommended for those who have dogs who like to dig up things in the backyard, as your crystals may become a lost treasure afterwards!
There are several crystals that also cleanse other crystals. These include, but are not limited to, Citrine, Selenite, Kyanite and Clear Quartz.
To use this method, lay your crystals alongside your chosen cleansing crystal for several hours, until you feel guided that they are recharged. This is also safe for all crystal types.
If you have been attuned to Reiki, or know someone who is, the purification technique “Jaki kiri kokyu ho” is a great way to cleanse crystals. As it is an energetic cleansing, this is also suitable for all crystals, and takes less than five seconds to achieve.
Hold your hand flat approximately five centimetres from the crystal and perform the purification technique with three straight motions, similar to a karate chop, to perform the cleanse. Charging the crystal with reiki afterwards will also bring healing benefits to the crystal, and for future uses.
This is perhaps a less well-known method, but it is easy to perform, nonetheless. Brown rice can be used to draw out negativity in a safe and contained setting and is especially useful for protective stones.
To cleanse with this method, fill a bowl with dry brown rice and bury the crystals in the grains. Leave this for a day, or as long as you feel guided to, then remove your crystals. You must discard the rice immediately, as it has absorbed the energy that you are eliminating.
This method may be less known as many may find this to be wasteful, but it is safe to conduct for all crystal types.
Another lesser known method but can be effective and used in conjunction with meditation.
To perform the cleansing, hold the crystal in your dominant hand and focus your intention. Inhale deeply through your nostrils. Then, bring the crystal closer your face and exhale short, but forceful breathes through the nose onto the stone. You can visualise yourself blowing away the energies weighing down the crystal, which in turn raises its vibration once again.
A safe and effective way to cleanse all crystals, this method may be intimidating for some as they feel unsure of whether it is working or not. As well as cleansing, this method is a good exercise for using the Third Eye Chakra as it requires one to visualise the method entirely.
First, spend a few minutes to ground and centre your energy. Then, proceed by picking up your crystal and visualise your hands filling up with a bright, white light. You can also use the violet flame for a more intense healing.
Visualise this light surrounding the crystal and growing brighter in your hands. The light is purifying the energy stored within and flushing out all imbalances and negativity. Continue in this manner until you feel a shift in the crystal’s energy. You can use a minute as a rough guideline, but it is all dependent on feeling.
After cleansing your crystals, they should feel energetically and physically lighter. Be sure to do this as a regular practice, as it will benefit your crystal work as well as keeping your crystals finely tuned.
